America, One Moment at a Time — #22

When English Needs an English Translator

One thing I’ve discovered during our American sojourn:

Sometimes I need a translator.

Not from English to another language.

From English to English. 😄

After all, English is not exactly my first language.

And sometimes, even after all these years, my ears seem to have their own ideas about what was said. 😄

Then I came across this comic in a local US newspaper.

The customer wants multivitamins for adults.

Except Grandpa hears “fraddles.”

Luckily, the grandson is there to translate.

And then comes the perfect payment:

A candy bar for the translator. 😄

It made me think:

Sometimes the problem isn’t the language.

It’s the way we hear it.

And perhaps “Sorry, could you say that again?” is one of the most useful phrases in any language.
