If Only Daddy Had Gotten A Kindle

Self-help to Shelf-help?

Oh, if only Daddy had caught onto the Kindle craze! My home would look more like a home and less like the aftermath of a library apocalypse.

When my Dad took his final bow, I enthusiastically claimed his entire library, dragging box after box like a book hoarder on a mission. Now, those very books I used to mock him about sit smugly on my shelves, whispering, “Who’s laughing now?” Total plot twist.

Daddy was the king of cool, the Zen master of chill. He’d just smile at my endless teasing over his self-help book obsession. I mean, the man had more “unleash your inner superhero” books than a life coach convention.

Every trip to Pai & Co. Bookshop on Broadway in Ernakulam felt like a treasure hunt, with him leaving with yet another version of a “live your best life” guide. I’m convinced they had a loyalty card just for him—“Buy ten, get one existential crisis free!”

Naturally, Daddy went on to write his own wisdom-filled masterpiece, “Keep the Doctor Away”. And wouldn’t you know it—Pai & Co. sold more copies than anyone else. The universe has a sense of humour.

If only he’d had a Kindle two decades back, I could’ve avoided this avalanche of paperbacks! Now I’m wading through motivational mountains in search of one last elusive title: “How to Tidy Up When You Own a Million Books”.

If anyone finds a copy, you know where to find me. I’ll crawl out of my book cave to grab it!

  1. Very well written, Mohan. While Kindle can replace the mountain of books in your library, it can’t give you the pleasure of feeling the pages that your Dad turned while reading the book or smell of the pages of the book as it gets older and the sight of what he left behind for you – treasure of knowledge and abundance of love for his son. God bless your Dad. Happy reading!!!

    1. That’s so true. 🙏
I was just being playfully sarcastic as I used to be with Daddy. 😎😄
Thank you so much for the beautifully expressed opinion. 🙏
