America, One Moment at a Time — #32

A Century of New York on Wheels

We had come to see the Brooklyn Bridge.

Instead, we found ourselves staring at buses.

Lots of them.

And not exactly the buses we were used to seeing in New York. 😄

There was this 1918 open-top double-decker.

1918!

It looked like it had arrived straight from another era.

Actually, it had. 😄

Then came a 1956 bus, followed by buses from 1958 and 1959.

Different shapes.
Different colours.
Different eras.

Yet all had once carried ordinary New Yorkers to work, school, shops and home.

Now they were parked beneath the Brooklyn Bridge, surrounded by tourists taking photographs.

Including us. 😄

I loved the thought that these buses had once been part of everyday New York life.

People had climbed aboard without thinking twice.

Today, we were admiring them as pieces of history.

It reminded me that a city’s history isn’t always found in grand buildings.

Sometimes it comes with four wheels, a driver’s seat and a very old radiator. 😄

And for a first-time visitor, discovering a century of New York on wheels beneath the Brooklyn Bridge was quite a bonus.

We came for the bridge.
We stayed for the buses.
😊
