San Francisco: A City Full of Surprises

One moment you’re cruising along a beautiful street; the next, the road plunges downhill as though the city has forgotten to flatten it!

In San Francisco, even a short drive can feel like a small adventure.

The Golden Gate Bridge needs no introduction.

But the city’s smaller surprises are equally memorable.

The Painted Ladies—rows of charming Victorian houses in attractive colours… look as though ordinary houses decided to dress up for the occasion.

Those steep roads bring their own challenges.

I was told that some buses use special braking systems that help them slow down safely on downhill stretches.

Clearly, gravity is taken seriously here!

Look up, and overhead wires criss-cross the sky, supplying electricity to the famous cable cars and trolleybuses.

The cable cars, with passengers sometimes standing on their running boards, ply San Francisco’s steep hills, climbing up and rattling down with remarkable character.

Even parked cars have a special trick: their front wheels are often turned towards the kerb on steep streets to help prevent them from rolling downhill.

Tiny white vehicles patrol the streets, keeping an eye on parking violations, while cycle rickshaws add another twist to the traffic.

At Buena Vista Café, Irish coffee is a celebrated attraction, reputed to be among the world’s best.

Even San Francisco’s fog has a name: Karl the Fog!

So famous is this regular visitor that you can find merchandise bearing his name.

Not every city can boast a celebrity weather condition!

San Francisco: where hills challenge vehicles, houses wear colourful personalities, and even the fog has a fan club.

A giant among skyscrapers! San Francisco’s R-Evolution reminds us that some sights are simply impossible to ignore.
A red bull in the city! This striking feature outside STK Steakhouse adds a splash of colour to San Francisco’s streets.

  1. I agree, SF is a spectacular city to visit! Looks like you hit all the high points!

One factoid that you may find interesting. When they were building the Golden Gate Bridge with no safety nets, almost 40 workmen fell to their deaths.

After they put up the safety nets, same crews, same work…but not one man fell, either into the net or to their death.

Seems like having a safety net provides courage. Not without spiritual implications!

    1. Thank you! 😊 We certainly enjoyed discovering San Francisco’s many sides. And what a thought-provoking story about the Golden Gate Bridge’s safety net! I looked it up now and discovered that it saved 19 workers, who became known as the “Halfway-to-Hell Club.” Sadly, there were also tragic accidents during construction.

But your reflection about the safety net giving people courage really resonates. Sometimes, knowing there is something to catch us when we fall gives us the confidence to take that next step in life. A lovely thought with a deeper meaning! 🙏💛

  2. I’m glad you are enjoying your trip.

I had a stick shift VW bus when I was in SF. It was pretty scary driving. Hope you didn’t have to walk any of those hills 😀

    1. Thank you! 😊 A stick-shift VW bus on those hills must have been quite an adventure! 😂 We were fortunate to enjoy the city without having to prove our hill-climbing skills on foot. Some of those slopes certainly make you appreciate both the driver and the vehicle! 😀🙏🏻

  3. Beautiful pictures of a beautiful city. You’ve definitely hit the highlights, except maybe for the sea lions at Pier 39 😀 And yes, the fog. My brother lives outside of Sacramento, but he and his wife go into San Francisco often. They joke that they own so many San Francisco souvenir sweatshirts because it will be 100 degrees when they leave home and in the 50s in the city.

    1. Thank you! 😊 We did visit the sea lions at Pier 39, but I’ve saved those pictures for another story. So they haven’t escaped my camera! 😂
And the souvenir sweatshirt story is hilarious. San Francisco seems to have found a clever way of turning its unpredictable weather into a retail opportunity! 😀
