The Palace That Wasn’t Supposed to Stay
When we first saw the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, I wasn’t quite sure what I was looking at.
It looked ancient.
Roman, perhaps.
Greek, maybe.
Definitely not what I expected to find in San Francisco. 😄

Then I discovered something surprising.
It wasn’t ancient at all.
It was built in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition. A huge World’s Fair celebrating San Francisco’s recovery after the 1906 earthquake and fire.
And there was an even bigger surprise.
It wasn’t meant to stay.

The architect, Bernard Maybeck, deliberately created the look of ancient ruins.
So perhaps I wasn’t completely wrong.

Just about the date. 😄
But Maybeck wasn’t simply designing a building.
The lagoon, gardens, trees, columns, and arches were all part of the experience.

And the 1915 exhibition itself was enormous… with eight exhibition palaces, pavilions from around the world, and displays of technology and innovation.
The Palace was supposed to disappear with the fair.

But San Franciscans didn’t want to lose it.
The original structure eventually deteriorated, but the Palace was rebuilt and preserved.
And today, more than a century later, people still walk beneath its columns, sit beside its lagoon, take photographs and create new memories.

A building that was never supposed to stay…
stayed.
Perhaps that is what makes a place truly special.
Not simply that it survives.
But that people decide it is worth keeping. ❤️

It’s wonderful! So glad it has been preserved.

Absolutely, Lori! 😊 I felt the same way. Knowing that it was never meant to stay makes its preservation even more special. Some places become part of a city’s story simply because people cared enough to save them. ❤️🙏🏻

It really is! 😊 What surprised me was discovering that this beautiful building was never actually meant to stay. I’m glad it did. It has become such a special part of San Francisco. ❤️🙏🏻

I never saw it when I lived in the bay area or visited it years before with my parents. The Seattle center space needle was built for some expo and even parts of the University of WA.

That’s interesting! 😊 It’s amazing how easily we can miss something that’s right there, even after living in a place or visiting several times. 😊
